 February 2012

First image of sprites recorded from CAHA Observatory by TRAPPA Group.

To capture very short events, it is common to separate odd and even lines of the CCD image. Here, you can see two images, one over the other. The upper one corresponds to the odd lines of the CCD and the lower one, to the even lines of the CCD.  This image was taken at 25fps, so each sub-image lasted 20ms (40 ms per frame).

This kind of sprites are called C-sprites (columniform sprites), and appeared the night of the 13th February 2012 at 05:01 AM over the north-east of Sicily (Italy).
